Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has approved a set of palliative measures for state workers, including a ₦10,000 monthly transportation allowance and a weekly day off, to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices.
The measures, which take effect from April 2026 and will run for an initial period of three months, are designed to ease the financial burden of commuting on public servants amid increased petrol pump prices.
In a statement, the State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, said eligible workers would benefit from both the transport allowance and a designated day off each week. He noted that the initiative is intended to address commuting challenges while improving morale and productivity across the public service.
Onasanya, however, explained that certain categories of workers would be exempt from the weekly day-off arrangement due to the critical nature of their responsibilities. These include medical personnel, judicial officers, teaching and non-teaching staff, security personnel, accounting officers, heads of departments, and other essential duty officers.
He added that although these workers are excluded from the day-off policy, they will still receive the ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance.
To ensure continuity in government operations, Onasanya stated that accounting officers in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) would determine the specific day off for eligible staff.
Describing the initiative as “timely and considerate,” the Head of Service commended the governor for prioritizing workers’ welfare despite prevailing economic challenges. He also urged public servants to reciprocate the gesture through increased dedication, discipline, and improved service delivery.
According to him, the intervention reflects the state government’s commitment to supporting its workforce while maintaining efficiency in the delivery of public services.
