Ghana has summoned Thando Dalamba, the acting high commissioner of South Africa, in response to recent xenophobic attacks and anti-foreigner protests reported in parts of South Africa.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the move was intended to formally convey the government’s “strong concern” over alleged intimidation and harassment of foreign nationals, including Ghanaian citizens.

According to the ministry, tensions escalated following protests by groups of South Africans calling for the removal of foreign nationals from local communities. Viral videos circulating online appear to show demonstrators accusing migrants of taking jobs and placing pressure on public services.

Ablakwa stated that such actions undermine the dignity and rights of law-abiding residents. He also expressed concern over reports advising foreign nationals to remain indoors for their safety.

The minister referenced an incident in KwaZulu-Natal province in which a Ghanaian resident was reportedly confronted and asked to provide proof of legal status, with some individuals allegedly demanding that he leave the country.

He warned that similar incidents in the past have escalated into violence and fatalities, underscoring the need for urgent measures to prevent a recurrence. Ablakwa further highlighted the longstanding diplomatic and historical ties between the two nations, noting Kwame Nkrumah’s support for South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle, and described the current developments as contrary to the principles of African unity and solidarity.

Ghana has called for immediate and effective steps to ensure the safety and protection of its nationals in South Africa, as well as firm assurances that such incidents will not be repeated.

“The unprovoked harassment of law-abiding individuals is unacceptable,” the statement said, adding that Ghana has lodged a formal protest and urged swift intervention by relevant authorities to prevent further escalation.

In response, Dalamba indicated that the South African government is aware of the situation and is taking steps to restore calm. He added that security agencies are monitoring developments and working to hold those responsible accountable.

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it will continue to engage with South African authorities to safeguard the welfare of its citizens.
