The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended the ongoing strike by primary and secondary school teachers, directing members to return to classrooms on Monday, April 27.

The decision was announced on Sunday in Gwagwalada by the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa, following an emergency meeting convened to assess the intervention of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in the dispute which began on April 20.

Shafa disclosed that the minister had approved a monthly funding commitment of ₦5 billion to address teachers’ outstanding entitlements and welfare concerns. According to him, the package includes ₦2 billion from the FCT’s internally generated revenue (IGR) and ₦3 billion from 10 percent of the IGR allocated to area councils.

He explained that the funds would be used to implement the 40 percent peculiar allowance for teachers and to clear outstanding payments owed to primary school teachers.

Teachers across the FCT had embarked on an indefinite strike last week, withdrawing their services over unresolved demands relating to welfare, allowances, and career progression.

On promotion-related issues, Shafa said the minister had pledged to liaise with the FCT Civil Service Commission to remove the vacancy requirement for promotions and to review the 2024 promotion exercise.

Following the resolutions reached with relevant stakeholders, the union has instructed all affected teachers to resume duties as scheduled. Shafa also emphasized that no teacher should face victimisation for participating in the industrial action.

He added that the union would continue to monitor the implementation of the agreement and could reconsider its position if the FCT Administration fails to fulfill its commitments.

The SWEC chairman commended teachers for their unity during the strike and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to securing improved working conditions in the FCT education sector.
