The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has formally declared the Ondo South senatorial seat vacant following the appointment of Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The announcement was made during Tuesday’s plenary session, where Akpabio stated that the vacancy takes immediate effect in accordance with constitutional provisions.

He also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election within 30 days to fill the vacant seat.

In line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the National Assembly is required to formally notify the electoral body of any vacancy in its membership to trigger the process for a fresh election.

Prior to his appointment, Ibrahim represented Ondo South Senatorial District under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
