The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman following the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.

The decision comes after a review by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which examined the circumstances surrounding the incident in line with established internal procedures. Speaking at an emergency press conference in Abuja, the IGP disclosed that the officer, alongside other members of his team found culpable, has been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the findings of the panel, ASP Usman acted in “gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.” The committee subsequently recommended his immediate dismissal, along with that of other implicated officers.

The IGP stated that upon dismissal, the affected officers would be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities to face prosecution for unlawful homicide. He confirmed that the recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification in accordance with due process.

Reiterating the Force’s stance, Disu emphasized a zero-tolerance policy on extrajudicial actions and abuse of power. “No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he said.

The IGP also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi, acknowledging their loss and assuring them that the matter would be treated with utmost seriousness. He stressed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring that justice is both served and seen to be served, in order to strengthen public confidence and institutional accountability.

He further urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reaffirming the Force’s dedication to professionalism, discipline, and the protection of citizens’ rights.

The killing of 28-year-old Ogidi has sparked widespread outrage online. Police reports indicate that the incident occurred on April 26, when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence suggesting that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
