A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) planted beneath a vehicle detonated at the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos State, on Monday morning, leaving one person injured.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, disclosed this while inspecting the scene of the incident. He said the police command swiftly responded after receiving reports of the explosion by deploying Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives to secure the area and begin investigations.
According to Tijani, preliminary findings indicate that the blast was caused by an IED concealed beneath the passenger side of the vehicle. The device reportedly exploded when the vehicle's engine was started.
"We promptly deployed our EOD team after receiving reports of an explosion. The area was cordoned off and thoroughly searched," the commissioner said.
"The IED was under the vehicle by the passenger side. It exploded when the vehicle was started."
He added that one person sustained injuries in the explosion and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, where the victim is said to be in stable condition.
Tijani further revealed that fragments of the explosive device had been recovered from the scene and taken away for forensic analysis as investigations continue.
Also speaking on the incident, the Baale of Oke Mushin, Tajudeen Faronbi, said the explosion occurred at about 1 a.m.
Faronbi explained that he immediately alerted the area commander after receiving information about a suspicious situation involving the vehicle.
"Early this morning, around one o'clock, while I was praying, I received a call that something unusual had been seen," he said.
"When I got there, I saw a vehicle and people were afraid to go near it."
Security operatives have since secured the area, while authorities continue efforts to determine those behind the incident and the motive for planting the explosive device.
