The Edo State Police Command has arrested four suspects linked to the kidnapping of a woman at the popular Vegetable Market along Airport Road in Benin City.

The victim was abducted on June 14, 2026, while shopping with her husband and children. The incident, which was captured on video and widely circulated on social media, sparked public concern across the state. She was rescued by security operatives 48 hours after her abduction.

In a statement issued on June 23, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said police operatives recovered weapons, cash, a motorcycle, and a Lexus RX 350 SUV allegedly used in carrying out the crime.

According to the police spokesperson, operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), acting on credible intelligence and following directives from the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, launched a coordinated operation that led to the arrest of 32-year-old Marvelous Isaac on June 18.

The operation reportedly involved a gun battle during which another suspect, identified only as Precious, was killed.

Police said the suspects were found in possession of a red Lexus RX 350 SUV with registration number EKP 848 AE, believed to have been used in the kidnapping operation, a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, N2.05 million in cash, and a motorcycle.

Further investigations led to the arrest of three additional members of the syndicate on June 20. They were identified as Gift Raphael, 27, Wisdom Michael, and Rufus Michael. The arrests were made during separate operations in Benin City and parts of Delta State.

According to the command, all the suspects have made confessional statements linking them to the Vegetable Market kidnapping and other criminal activities within Edo State.

Commending the operatives for their professionalism, courage, and dedication, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika assured residents that the command remains committed to tracking down criminal elements and ensuring they face justice.

He also urged members of the public to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with timely and credible information while remaining vigilant and security conscious.
