A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Buba Galadima, has accused President Bola Tinubu of attempting to weaken opposition parties and stifle democratic competition in the country.
Galadima made the allegation on Tuesday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he claimed that the President’s efforts are being supported by the National Assembly.
The NDC stalwart also criticized the Tinubu administration, alleging that it has failed to deliver the expected dividends of democracy to Nigerians since taking office.
According to Galadima, the President shifted his focus to politics immediately after his inauguration rather than addressing the needs of the people.
“For the last two years, I have been criticizing the APC and its government because from the day Tinubu was inaugurated as Nigeria’s president, he started politicking and not delivering the services and democratic dividends to the people of Nigeria,” he said.
Galadima further alleged that Tinubu is unwilling to engage in fair political competition and is instead focused on weakening opposition parties and candidates.
“It doesn’t matter whether it’s right; democracy must outlive them. I have also said time without number that the president never wants to compete with anybody. He will try to destroy all opposition candidates and parties, and he is actively being supported by the National Assembly,” he stated.
He also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of drawing the judiciary into what he described as a broader effort to undermine democratic institutions.
“Now they have dragged the judiciary into it as a complementary part of the larger picture that this government of APC is trying to create for Nigerians.
“Democracy will survive whether APC or Tinubu is trying to subvert it. It will survive and outlive them,” Galadima added.
