The Super Falcons of Nigeria are set to have a new technical crew before the start of their 2028 Women’s Olympic qualifying campaign in October.
National Sports Commission Director-General, Bukola Olopade, disclosed this following the decision by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ask the technical crew led by Justine Madugu to step down after the team’s disappointing performance at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The NFF now faces the urgent task of appointing a new technical crew for the 10-time African champions as preparations for the Olympic qualifiers gather pace.
Speaking on the development, Olopade said the technical setup of the team could be adjusted to improve Nigeria’s chances of securing qualification for the Olympics.
“The Olympics are around the corner. We will see how we can tweak the technical team of the Falcons like we did for the U-23, which coach Eric Chelle will handle. This is because we are desirous of qualifying for the Olympics,” Olopade said.
The Super Falcons endured a difficult campaign at the WAFCON, opening their Group C campaign with a 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi.
Nigeria’s run ended in the quarter-finals on August 8 after a 1-0 loss to Cameroon, marking the team’s first elimination at that stage of the competition.
The defeat also denied the Falcons automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria later had another opportunity to book a World Cup place through the African qualification play-off but suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa.
With the Olympic qualifiers fast approaching, the NFF will now be expected to appoint a new technical crew capable of guiding the Super Falcons back to the Olympics.
