A Lagos High Court sitting at the JIC Taylor Courthouse in Igbosere has adjourned the trial of Benjamin Nnayereugo, popularly known as “Killaboi,” to May 21 and 22 for the continuation of cross-examination.

The adjournment follows ongoing testimony from Cordelia Onuwaghagbe, mother of the late Augusta Onuwaghagbe, the 21-year-old allegedly murdered by the defendant.

Cross-examination of the witness, led by defence counsel and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Marcel Oru, commenced on April 21 and continued on April 22 before Justice Ibironke Harrison.

During proceedings, the witness was questioned about whether the defendant’s family contacted her after her daughter’s death. She testified that an individual, who claimed to be the defendant’s father, reached out to her shortly after Nnayereugo’s arrest in Sierra Leone, proposing a meeting to resolve the matter. She stated that she declined the request, insisting that any discussions should only take place after his extradition to Nigeria.

Mrs. Onuwaghagbe further told the court that she had, at some point, been in contact with the defendant, who transferred $1,530 to her following her daughter’s death. She also disclosed that the defendant had opened a cryptocurrency account for the deceased prior to her death, but maintained that the funds in the account belonged to her daughter.

She added that she was unaware of any financial contribution from the defendant toward Augusta’s burial.

Proceedings were, however, disrupted due to a power outage in the courtroom, which prevented the defence from presenting electronic evidence.

Nnayereugo is accused of killing Augusta at his residence in the Ajah area of Lagos on July 13, 2023, before fleeing the country.

He was declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force in October 2023, prompting the issuance of an INTERPOL Red Notice. He was initially arrested in Sierra Leone under a false identity but escaped custody during a prison break in November 2023.

According to authorities, he subsequently evaded arrest across multiple jurisdictions using forged identities before relocating to Doha, Qatar, in January 2025. He was eventually apprehended in February 2025 following international collaboration and biometric verification, and was extradited to Nigeria in April 2025.

The Lagos State Government filed a two-count charge against him in June 2025, including alleged murder and indecent interference with the victim’s corpse.

He pleaded not guilty upon arraignment in November 2025.
