The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a devastating loss to both the state and the nation.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu. According to the government, the retired military officer died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.
The statement noted that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, made extensive efforts to secure his release, but all attempts proved unsuccessful.
"The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, announces the tragic passing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar," the statement read.
"It is with profound sadness that we confirm his death while in bandits' captivity. Despite relentless efforts by the government and security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended tragically."
The government added that the late general's death was due to natural causes resulting from underlying health conditions.
Describing the incident as a major national loss, the statement said Abubakar's abduction and death have deprived the country of a respected military officer whose service to the nation will be remembered.
Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, described the development as a "dark moment" and stressed the need for a stronger and more coordinated response to insecurity across the region.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed the government's commitment to working with security agencies to tackle banditry and improve public safety.
"The Katsina State Government remains committed to collaborating with the Federal Government and security forces to ensure those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice. Our resolve to eliminate banditry and protect the lives of residents remains unwavering," the statement added.
The government also offered prayers for the repose of the late general's soul and comfort for his family during this difficult period.
Last week, reports indicated that the kidnappers had demanded the release of three detained fighters and the return of livestock allegedly seized during security operations as conditions for freeing Abubakar and his wife.
The retired general was abducted alongside his wife on May 30 while travelling through Katsina State.
