Suspected armed men on Monday night launched an attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos in Plateau State, leaving three security operatives dead in an attempted breach of the country’s top policy training institution.

According to sources, the attackers invaded the facility around 11:40 p.m., firing shots that sparked a gun battle with security personnel stationed at the institute. A staff member, who spoke anonymously, said the assault came suddenly and caught the facility off guard.

The source explained that security operatives engaged the gunmen in a fierce exchange to stop them from gaining entry into the institution. During the confrontation, three security personnel—two soldiers and one police officer attached to the facility—were killed.

He added that the quick response of security forces prevented the attackers from breaking deeper into the premises or causing further damage. The motive behind the attack, however, remained unknown at the time of reporting.

A resident of Kuru in Jos South Local Government Area, Bulus Haruna, said the incident caused panic in surrounding communities, with residents awakened by sustained gunfire that lasted several minutes.

Meanwhile, NIPSS has confirmed the attack, stating that the situation has been brought under control and normal activities are ongoing.

In a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs, Dr Osime Samuel, the institute said there is no current threat to staff, participants, residents, or facilities. It added that security operatives responded swiftly and effectively to contain the situation.

“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies,” the statement said. “There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled.”

The institute further stated that security agencies have begun investigations into the incident and warned against speculation.

“Security agencies have commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. As investigations are ongoing, it would be premature to speculate on the nature, scope or outcome of the event,” it added.

NIPSS also noted that it is working closely with relevant authorities and will release verified updates as more information becomes available. It reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of its community and commended the professionalism of the security personnel involved in repelling the attack.
