Goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed after fire gutted part of the Bola Ige International Market in Gbagi, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident occurred around noon on Monday at 348 ZI/E Milo Zone of the market, affecting two lock-up shops.

Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement made available on Tuesday.

According to him, firefighters arrived at the scene and immediately began efforts to contain the inferno, preventing it from spreading to seven other shops in the row and nearby properties.

“On arrival, it was discovered that two out of a row of nine lock-up shops were engulfed in flames,” Akinwande said.

He added that the fire was successfully brought under control and no casualty was recorded.

Akinwande said a post-fire investigation had commenced to determine the cause of the incident.

The blaze, however, destroyed goods worth millions of naira belonging to traders in the affected shops.
