Argentina captain and football superstar Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football.

Messi made the announcement in an Instagram post on Monday, saying he has decided to step aside because he believes he has “nothing more to give” to the national team.

The 39-year-old also said the emergence of younger talents influenced his decision, noting that “some great young players” are coming through and deserve the opportunity to represent Argentina.

Messi’s decision marks a major turning point in his remarkable international career, having led Argentina to major honours and established himself as one of the greatest players in football history.
