The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to step aside from the 2027 presidential race and support the party’s candidate, Peter Obi, to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
NDC Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, Theo Abu Agada, made the call while acknowledging Atiku’s character, political experience and vision for Nigeria.
Agada argued that Atiku should prioritise the broader opposition movement over his personal presidential ambition, insisting that stepping aside would not diminish his legacy.
“Every electioneering season. AA is a good and solid man, but he needs to give it up at this point,” Agada said.
“His idea for a working Nigeria is brilliant, but at this point, he needs to give up his ambition.
“If he steps aside, nothing is going to affect his sterling legacy. AA should support Obi to kick the APC out.”
The call comes shortly after Atiku declared that the 2027 presidential election would be the final time he would seek the presidency, regardless of whether he wins or loses.
Atiku’s declaration has intensified discussions within opposition circles over the possibility of a single presidential candidate emerging to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
